DILEMMA OF ENGINEERS

An air of lull blanketed this cozy place which housed a gamut of pissed off faces jabbering with frenzied gestures, a set of provoking creatures (toppers as in) strutting around “ common yaar we too sabotaged our exam…loosing 5 marks can u believe it……oooo shit forgot to mention this detail do u think it might count against me”  and two girls gaping at the thali placed on the table in front of them with a sense of what seemed like an introspection-
Bunny: come on duck just push that thing through your food canal .25rs buddy, I haven’t ordered it to sit staring at.
Duck: what went wrong??? I slogged the whole day hardly slept for more than 2 hours yet I goofed up………..
Bunny: well!! Slogging must have been our motto right from the beginning of the semester not 24 hours prior to the impending catastrophe. But don’t feel guilty we indeed have been working our way through other stuff………..
Duck: (interrupted) other stuff??????  Chuck it alright is it going to hold any credibility after all in this place which worships 80% scorers. You agree or not but we’ve made a grave mistake poking our noses into robotics, tpp’s and tech fests.
Bunny: I least expected you to take sides with this cliché hypo critic thinking I mean we’ve landed in these activities not because we were confident that we could manage academics and non-academics juxtapose, but rather because if we weren’t engaged in those we wouldn’t be ourselves. The semester starts with a 30 marks minor and there starts your marathon into the ordeal of eternal practicals, tests, assignments and before you gasp for some more breath you find yourselves face to face with an ugly demon ‘the semester exams’ this is so inhumane.
Duck: why crib about the system when you know you can’t change it. It’s better we plan our activities accordingly, see if we could squeeze time for those and if found impossible just dump them. After all it’s that highly esteemed 75%+ stamp that’s going to fetch you a job and some respect from your relatives.
Bunny: you’ve got it wrong duck, a company does not rate a college in terms of the no. of 75% scorers it has churned out , but rather in terms of the no. of accolades it’s students have achieved in various innovative projects, national level competions and inter college fests.
Duck: but don’t you see through the irony of this whole situation the outside world recognizes the   college due to people like us but allows only those high aggregates to sit for the aptitude test. All your achievements will hold no water in their judgment.
Bunny: But that’s exactly what irks me the most and the worst part of it is a handful of people responsible for this are not addressing the issue in a way it needs to addressed. Moreover our paper setters seem to be more interested in testing our assimilatory and presentation skills ……… creativity and scientific temperament seems to have lost it’s stand.
Duck: precisely ……… the methodology to study for tests is poles apart from the way one needs to study for application based understanding.
Bunny: yeah maybe we’d find open book tests and challenging assignments more interesting than scrabbling down experiments in the practical files.
Duck: ahhhhh…something I hate to do. But good that you cribbed about practical files it has just reminded me of a promise we made a week ago to submit our analog practical files by tomorrow.
Bunny: oh common you talk as though we’ve had a past record of keeping up the promises we make to our teachers, breaking it once more wouldn’t hurt ……I am feeling lazy …come let’s go for  a movie.
Duck: no…not at all bunny ( literally dragging her by her arm)  …..no excuse to be lazy now …..I don’t want ourselves to get chucked out of the lab once again…….

DEEPTI BAGGA

JIYO UTHO BADHO JEETO.... TERA MERA JAHAAN
LETS GO!!!
The anthem on everybody’s lips...
an ensemble of elegant musicians,
gives  the world  their new ‘waka waka’ and better...
India is here ,jiyo utho  badho jeeto...!!!

the glittering words of Mehboob with the magic of Rehman
inspiring us for exemplary performances....
the participants marching forward with great zeal!
the flag unfurling high with greater,  in the sky...

the lyrics  exude  power and energy...
charging the aura with joy and ecstasy!!!
make our veins burst out ,with practice and fear
we ,equally  maintaining the poise to deliver it here

Our cultural heritage came live on stage
the henna clad hands shown bright...unfazed!
As the  newely wed bride , with the hesitation if ‘all will be well...’?
the faith to make it all work....is all what we have!!

Such was the grandeur of our opening ceremony;
so shall be the closing ,amen!!
INDIA, still in its youth stands upright and proud
eyes...gleaming  with conviction!!!

Let us do what we do best ‘atithi devo bhava’
All ‘rise to the occasion’ and feel the ‘rhythm’.
Live, Rise, Ascend, Win
jiyo utho bado jeeto....,tera mera jahaan !let’s go!

Bid adieu to the nonchalance of the capital...
open  your arms wide enough to embrace the newer and warmer  DELHI.
let the world know us not any more as the land of snake charmers;
but by the likes of Narang and Mirza who charm hearts no less.

For once let our daily chores rest and wait...
To welcome with great pleasure  the CWG team 2010.
Afterall,
It’s not everyday that HERMES descend on the ARYAVARTA...
WE ARE A LUCKY COUNTRY ,I MUST SAY.

Let us all get  geared up for triumph...
Hoping that we leave imprints on their souls...
Sweet memories sprinkling as sweat ...
Tokens of jubiliation is what they should take along...!

WE have come a long way from ’47;
Retaining the spirit and sincerity...
Shouldering the onus that we have
to give the world it had never experienced...world class hospitality.

Unshattered by the whistle blowing of the media...
Delhiites, all set to play the best hosts to cwg 2010.
let  the world shout out loud ‘encore’!!
Let we be elated  by what we deliver...’the best ever cwg ‘!!!

SHEFALI ARORA

JIYO,UTHO,BADO,JEETO,TERA MERA JAHAAN LET'S GO!

This fabulous song in the CWG’s praise,
Has set in us a flame ablaze,
It has shown us a way to rekindle life,
And live it to the fullest,in all its strife.
It’s our world,we have to make it rock,
So get up,its mysteries you must unlock.
Forget what’s done,a new world awaits,
Make a move towards its golden gates.
We are the citizens of ‘the golden sparrow’,
Let us get rid of hatred and beliefs so narrow.
Celebrate the pride today India has attained,
Enjoy the peace, the showers God has rained.
And take a step forward to fulfill India’s desire,
Live to do,what makes our tricolor fly higher.
Lets put an effort to build a world of harmony,
To make ourselves happier, and others free from agony!

 PRIYA JUNEJA

SHEFALI ARORA@DEEPTI BAGGA ,PARIDHI AGGARWAL AND SHREYA CHHABRA:

I think I have tried well to explain my points  in the last two posts. Now I am going to quote some points  from Dr. Abdul Kalam’s letter, which I came across recently. Maybe this will satisfy all of you.
In 3000 Years of our history, people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards. The Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation.
We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, and their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. I believe that India got its first vision of freedom in 1857, when we started the war of independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us.
Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them.We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice.
Why? In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE?

YOU say that our government is inefficient.YOU say that our laws are too old.YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination..YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?
YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India? When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home.
Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government.
But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.
So friends, you are taking up the same few issues again and again. Look into the positive shades of your country. There is much and much to explore. Think about it that if India has reached this far, tomorrow will be certainly better than today. Be proud of what we have gained, not what we have lost. I again repeat that nobody is perfect and there is always a chance of improvement.
So I still don’t agree with your points and say that I AM PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN!!!!

PARIDHI AGGARWAL @SHEFALI ARORA: INTERJECTION

The CWG has been termed by you as a success, surely, we have saved it from being a failure but I really doubt if it can be termed as a success so early. Surely the money to raise the standard of stadiums will be good for the country in long run but do you think that’s all the money has gone into?? According to the findings, this is what CWG officials have been upto: Treadmills on hire at Rs.9 lakh, air conditioners at Rs.4 lakh, toilet paper at Rs.3,757, umbrellas at Rs.6,000 per piece! From the exorbitant rates to Scheduled Caste funds being diverted for construction work, these Games have certainly been sullied by massive corruption. And if we take into account all this, the Govt. has achieved the same work in atleast 70% inflated cost. No points for guessing where the missing money landed. You talked about the negative coverage by the media, sure, I totally agree that media has been overcritical in some of the aspects but I really doubt whether the reports of tiles falling from ceiling of new stadiums and foot overbridge collapsing in less than a week of inauguration, can  be dubbed as something media created.  You talked about justice being delivered in 80% of the cases, however the statistics clearly show the opposite. Going by official figures, the subordinate judiciary across the country has a backlog of 26.4 million cases, while the high courts have an arrear of 3.8 million. The Supreme Court had crossed the mark of 50,000 pending cases as of long back. The actual figures may be more. In the words of a Supreme Court judge, it will take India more than 320 years to clear the current backlog. Can this be termed as success of judiciary??
You commented about the various employment schemes started by the Govt. , the fact that most of the farmers are still unemployed or seasonally employed, puts a big question mark on effectiveness of such schemes. In the case of female foeticide the statistics again don’t support your claim. The 2006 National Family Health Survey shows that prosperity does little to curb the evil as Punjab's overall sex ratio at birth (considered a more accurate indicator of female foeticide) was 776 against 793 in 2001. In urban areas, it goes further down to 761:1,000. The figures are equally dismal for Haryana and contradict the notion that female foeticide has declined over the years. I agree that India has recorded a whooping GDP growth which is commendable however it has little to do with the common man. The real issues concerning him are price rise and as it is, the inflation currently stands at an all time high of 11.5%. Lastly I would say that I fully support the good aspects of India but India still has a long way to go.
The above points question the very fundamentals of democracy and they surely don’t make me feel proud.

DEEPTI BAGGA :@SHEFALI ARORA

hello shefali..!!i would like to say that you rightly mentioned the non violent means that we used for our independence ,but my worthy opponent are you forgetting th eblood red pages of history post independence?? the butchering of hindus and muslims ,the communal riots that took place that took many innocent lives.where was the non violence ideology,my friend! even BAPU,the originator of this philosophy lost his life due to this.you talked about democracy ,but i would like to mention that our judiciary is weak and under a lot of political pressure.the cases of priyadarshini mattoo and jessica lal still haunt women throughout the nation.in our country if anyone has a revolution to make,he has to pay for it with his life.
you also mentioned the respect of  values and traditions in INDIA,i agree that past has taught us very important lessons.but i would also mention that in the race to ape the west all these values have somewhere lost.the concept of nuclear families have come in place of joint ones.more and more cases of dowry deaths and domestic violence crop up but in vain.Indian govt till now finds it difficult to criminalise ‘marital rape’.women’s reservation bill was thwarted by the likes of lau and yadav.where does present day india stand??
you also told us about our rich culture, folks dances and lok sangeets.i totally agree since india is blessed with a glorious past ,but my friend where is teh recognition in india.only foreigners have learned to appreciate our expertise ,this can easily be known by the general knowledge of our youngsters.they sure well know where disneyland is,but not if kathak and kathakali are different dance forms.
thank you!

SHREYA CHHABRA:@SHEFALI ARORA-INTERJECTION

I would like to tackle the issues you have pointed one by one.

CWG 2010 as you say is going to please the foreign delegates. Tell me, my friend, do you feel the need of doing so? You say that the Games are a means to achieve international integration when everyday you hear reports of officials and sportspersons of various countries using swear words and racist comments at one another…I don’t think that such things are in the spirit of international harmony. In fact, they are a sign of colonialism. The next thing you write in the context of the Games is that they are not a waste of money. Do you realize the fact that there are millions of Indians who are not getting food to eat, who don’t even know what the Games are?

Then the second issue you have raised is the female infanticide…how it has declined and so on. But you need to get your facts right. It has been noted that overall sex ratio has fallen from 927 to 880 per 1000 boys. Even in areas like Punjab, etc it is now close to 900 per 1000 boys. So, you can yourself judge the present scenario.

However, I certainly agree with you on the next issue which is the increased life expectancy. But it is not the only parameter with which we can judge the health facilities and infrastructure of a country. Other factors like sex ratio, infant mortality rate, the number of patients per doctor, etc should also be taken into account.

Schemes such has the 'JAWAHAR GRAM SAMRIDHI YOJANA','INDIRA AWAS YOJANA','INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SCHEME','MID-DAY MEALS AT SCHOOL’ are  good only in concept and not in implementation. Most of the funds and facilities that should reach the needy are reduced to nothing because of corrupt officials and middle-men.

And surely, your country gives you all the opportunities you need….Why so? Because, my friend, you are one of those rare lucky ones who has access to all the amenities in life.
You were blessed to be born in a place which provides you with all that your heart desires. But the reality is that they are several unlike you who do not even get a day’s meal or clean drinking water.

Over the last 60 years, whatever the achievements of India have been are commendable. But there are certain aspects which cannot be ignored. So, after reading all the above answers, I hope you will agree with me on the point that there is a long way ahead of us.
And unless and until, each Indian citizen gets the most basic amenities, we cannot rest upon our past laurels and glorify the  present which is non-existant.

SHEFALI ARORA @ PARIDHI AGGARWAL,SHREYA CHHABRA

Firstly I would like to comment on the issue of India being mocked for CWG, and wastage of money. It has been the opposite. The foreign delegates have been pleased by the way India has organized the event. Otherwise why has been India called ready for the next Olympics? Many players have reapplied for backing out earlier, seeing the way the games are going. The event has been given a thumbs up by everyone. Our media gave a negative coverage to it before it began, now it has been snubbed. The money which has been spent on the games is not sheer waste. These kind of events are important for international integration and the money raised in them will be used for the betterment of our country only. Delhi has got a new look now. And such good events will be appreciated by our future generations also, its not that only our past has been glorious. By these things,we are making our present better,a strong base for the future.
And good that communal backlash was reverted in the Babri verdict. Riots, curfews would not solve the matter at all.
Unscruplous elements are found in every country, but we always overshadow the good qualities in surplus. Please answer my question, friends. Why have we caught hold of a few cases in the country in which were a failure, or evils which had been on the increase? Why do not we appreciate the fact that if 20% have been a failure,80%have been a success? Why do not we stand up and be a part of the measures that are really getting implemented and need more people like us? Statistics say that female foeticide is now under control in states like Punjab, Haryana etc.Should we not be proud that India is considered to be an emerging superpower of the world?Be it technology, economy or any other area we have inculcated the knack to master all. With the GDP growth touching whopping levels of 9% per annum and a booming sensex the economy seems to be growing at an unprecedented rate. There has been considerable development on the social front as well. The literacy rate has improved significantly with almost three-fourth of the population considered literate now.Health facilities have improved both in terms of infrastructure as well as in terms of skilled personnel.Life expectancy at birth is almost 62 years now.Unemployment levels have gone down and thus has the poverty level.Schemes such has the 'JAWAHAR GRAM SAMRIDHI YOJANA','INDIRA AWAS YOJANA','INTEGRATED CHILD DEVELOPMENT SCHEME','MID-DAY MEALS AT SCHOOL' have helped to create a pool of opportunities for the rural people and has also motivated them to take part in the development process of the country. In the field of science and technology as well as in the industrial arena we have attained great heights.Indian space research is already on the verge of entering an elite group with 'Chandrayaan',India's lunar mission already on the cards. The Indian business houses have started to rule the world. With the growing spate of international acquisitions by India's biz houses, the world seems to be feeling the strength of Indian industry. Today an Indian can proudly say that my country provides me opportunities to pursue what i want which was indeed a rare spectacle some 20 years back.Today India's opinion is of considerable signifance on all the burning issues that the world faces today.India is looked upon with reverence by the arrogant west and we are a source of inspiration for the developing world. Our achievements have been exemplary over the last sixty years. We are  the free citizens of an independent, sovereign country.
Tell me friends, should we not be proud?

SHREYA CHHABRA:@ALPANA RASTOGI-INTERJECTION

With reference to your interjection#7, I would like to make the following points:

  1. You haven’t given the answer to your million dollar question-‘What is our position as compared to our neighbouring countries?’ However, I would definitely give an answer to that. Countries like china, Sri lanka have better HDI rankings than India. India lies far behind some countries in Africa and South America.
  2. I totally agree with you on the point that India’s IT sector has no comparison at all. Your statistics clearly point out the same. But, how many Indians have access to a computer? Clearly, not many.
  3. Your sentence-“we need to improve on certain areas such as education, sanitation reduction in poverty and corruption.” Actually, highlights all the major areas which affect the common man.
In another post, you had advised a fellow participant to keep a positive approach...which is what we have been doing up till now…sitting and hoping things will change, supporting it with our money, our effort and our labor. And I feel that as a citizen of this country, we have the right to be critical and put pressure so as to shape a better future.

PRIYA JUNEJA @ PARUL SHARMA - INTERJECTION #9

Thank you Parul. Broadly, you seem to have asked two questions and here’s what I’ve to say :
1.      As far as the history is concerned, I think, a nation, it’s identity i.e. what a nation actually is, is also determined by it’s past though I agree that’s the present which matters the most. I too, firmly believe that what matters is not where we stand but in which direction are we moving. And I’ve given quite a many reasons to be happy from the present day India.
2.      As far as brain drain is concerned, we all know it’s a two way process. Nobody would want to leave his country, if he gets to use his knowledge and skills. Letting your knowledge die just because you don’t want to leave country isn’t a rational idea as well. And I think, the boundaries created by us in the form of countries are by and large social and geographical. The ultimate aim is – the good of humanity as a whole. And you must not forget, NRI remittances are 3% of the GDP.
And last, we would all agree no individual, no society, no nation can be perfect. India has, say a million flaws but under the darkness of those million flaws we must not let the light of its trillion qualities be overshadowed. At this, I would like to bring to your notice that 13 to 17% of Americans live below poverty line and infact 40% of the Americans fall below poverty line at some point in a 10 year life span!

PARIDHI AGGARWAL @ALPANA RASTOGI- INTERJECTION

I appreciate the issues you have raised; however, I would like to differ with you that British rule is the only sole reason for India’s backwardness.  India was not the only country to witness the colonial era, infact colonial rule was seen in most parts of the world. We should not forget that countries like USA and Australia too were under the colonial rule at some point of time.  Today their strong global position is a testimony of the fact that if nations work hard, affects of colonial past can be reduced and even eradicated. 60 years of Independence is indeed enough time for a nation committed to self development to reach the global heights. Infact we in 60 years have not been able to provide even basic food and job security to our countrymen. Poverty and unemployment still remain the major hurdles as they did when India got independent. You raised the point about Taj mahal and how some monuments in other countries never make it to the World Wonders list. Indeed that’s  true but we are here to promote our heritage  rather than glorify  a single achievement. Instead of being complacent about the achievement of a single monument, efforts should be made to protect other monuments and help them reach the same height so that India is able to show its true potential to the fullest. There are numerous historial sites which if protected and developed properly can turn into major tourist attractions but today lie in shambles because of sheer negligence. Regarding CWG, it’s not the opening ceremony that matters but the right infrastructure to host such global game events, which we lack badly if the news reports are anything to go by. You talked about various famous personalities and how they have been awarded, however I would like to say that here we are not talking of some single Sachin tendulakar or Zakir hussain, we are not even talking of awards, we are talking of the hundreds and thousands of equally talented people of our country who are not given a chance to show their talent.
I would like to ask you if cannot but agree that country development is all about masses and not about some selected few

SHREYA CHHABRA@ADITI AGGARWAL, SHEFALI ARORA,PRERNA KHURANA-INTERJECTION # 8

I read all three points of view and the commonality in all three was the fact that India has a rich cultural heritage, how it shows unity in diversity and how India has showcased the same in the opening ceremony of CWG 2010.
Both these aspects can be countered by the arguments:

1.       Yes, even I take pride in the fact that India has had such a glorious past, but the need of the hour as I have already highlighted in my debate is THE PRESENT and nothing but the present.
2.       People like Mahatma Gandhi and all the other freedom fighters that my fellow contestants have pointed out and shall forever remain the greatest assets India could ever have. But the fact of the matter, they might have got you independence, but are we really free in the way these people wanted us to be?
3.       CWG 2010: a platform to showcase India to the rest of the world and it has indeed done so. But I feel this platform shouldn’t have been these games for the simple reason that it shows how we bowed before the British once and how we are doing it again and again.
4.       77000 crore, an amount that could change the lives of millions of Indians is being spent on the games. Don’t you think that it is a sheer waste of our money?

I would finally like to ask my fellow participants if they cannot but agree on the above mentioned points…

SHREYA CHABBRA - AGAINST

See, today I know, we are here to discuss about the topic-“WE ARE INDIANS-ARE WE PROUD OF INDIA?”…But the fact of the matter is that most of my fellow contestants are highlighting bits and pieces of India’s past…which was glorious undoubtedly but the thing that should be foremost is INDIA OF TODAY…and here is where the REALITY actually strikes.
Greetings to one and all, I am Shreya Chhabra and I am going to talk against the motion.

Let’s first face some quick facts and figures….

“Infant mortality rate: total: 50.78 deaths/1,000 live births
India ranks 63rd in the new poverty index, after Togo, before Haiti
Literacy in India is increasing at a sluggish rate of 1.5 per cent per year, says a recent report of the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO)”

Yes, I realize the fact that the figures I have shown say nothing new…but they are actually a mirror of India’s development.(Human Development Index).
First, as we see the infant mortality rate, we need to stop and think….Every year so many babies are dying; and some are there whose death is not even recorded. What could the reasons be….poor infrastructure, poor health facilities and gender bias…and so on. So, do we glorify our country?
Second thing that counts is poverty…Are the citizens able to afford even the most basic amenities? Do they get the food, clean water and a home to shelter them? Do you think Aryabhata’s zero or the spectacular ceremony of the CWG 2010 will be able to compensate the daily hardships that people in the country face?
In fact, this is the basic assessment of a country’s standard of living. India is one of the poorest nations of the world, lying in league with countries like Congo, Haiti and other under-developed African states.
Just because we are the lucky ones living in a city like Delhi with all the comforts in the world, we are lacking in the reality that  our fellow countrymen go through…don’t you think we are unfair in our judgment?
Thirdly, 70% of India’s population is under the age of 40 years and we all know, that the basic need for any person to rise and gain a steady living is nothing but EDUCATION. With the population rising at a staggering rate and the available infrastructure hardly making a difference, can we make a difference really?
At this point, I recognize that my fellow contestants will over-optimistically point out that India is the knowledge hub, the IT centre and we can make a difference…
But finally, I would like to say: People, wake up to the reality of life! In being over-zealous and unpractical, we are losing control over the circumstances that can shape the future of India… we need to respect and cherish the past, but our actions should be directed in the present and our sight towards the future.
Thank you.

ALPANA RASTOGI:@ ALL - INTERJECTION # 7

As the country celebrates another independence day, it is time for us to look back in another preceding years back at the preceding years. We need to evaluate how our country has progressed in these last few years that have witnessed a paradigm shift in power equations and a change in the government. The million-dollar question is: ‘What is our position as compared to our neighbouring countries?’

India’s expertise in the service sector is not yet matched by any of its neighbours. Banking, insurance, transport, finance, information technology and healthcare have improved over the decades. At the moment, more than half of the country’s GDP is contributed by the service sector. Statistically speaking, India has an estimated 120,000 qualified chartered accountants and more than 10 per cent of them are employed outside the country. A similar scenario exists for other professionally qualified specialists as well, such as, legal experts, architects, and design engineers. The knowledge and skills of Indian IT professionals is in demand all over the world.
According to the experts, India has been able to stabilize economy growth at a level of 6% plus. Following are the list of development of India globally:-3.22% million Indian are American,38% of doctors in America are Indians,12%of scientist in America are Indians,36%of NASA employees are Indians,34%of MICROSOFT employee are Indians,28% of IBM employee are Indians,13%of XEROX employee are Indians.
India has always been a spiritual country .It has been the birthplace of many traditional values such as renunciation, yoga etc In terms of
Art, our film industry is one of the largest in the world and the works of Indian director is appreciated by one and all .We have amidst the famous musician like the table maestro Zakir Hussian, vocalist Pundit  Bhimsen Joshi etc .such talented individuals brought laurels to our country and have made us proud. The achievements of India in these years have been phenomenal .To cite all of them here would be impossible. The one question here arise is “does any country
The India has lot more to achieve .I will not deny that as there is no achievement there has to be first step .India has crossed that first step .we need to improve on certain areas such as education, sanitation reduction in poverty and corruption. Our standard of living has also improved.
Time has come to make another ‘tryst and destiny’ to rise and salute the land that has given us life and freedom . India need us  today. It needs the courage and determination of every Indian on this earth to help it in achieving the place in the world, which every Indian has dreamt of.
Don’t you think we definetly support India in its success .Will always be with it.
JAI HIND!!!!!!

ALPANA RASTOGI:@PARIDHI AGGARWAL - INTERJECTION # 6

You are right that India is developing country not a developed one. But you don’t know the clarification behind this .India was under colonial rule, Britishers uprooted India totally in all the sphere. India was not allowed to made fabrics of cotton which is their traditional wearing. They even taxed salt .India got independence on 1947.Now its been 60 years and India has developed a lot in every sphere. It is the 7th largest country in economy in the world. You talked about Taz Mahal .We should be happy that it is a part of 7 wonders in the world. It is a major hub of tourist attraction. While there are many others monuments in the world which is soliloquy.
You commented on CWG,I think it is a big hit.It was heard that its opening ceremony event was a big hit even more thanthat Olympics world cup event in Beijing.
Artist like Zakir  Hussian and Pundit Ravishankar are still known for their great work in uplifting India’s culture. No one have forgotten any of the real heroes. We still read about them in primary classes. And cricketer like Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguli are still a part of human discussion. And its not that they are not taken care off .Our president reward the winners and the real heroes with khel ratna or Padma Bhushan  award. Which always instill them to do better. New comers are also welcomed to take part to boost India’s culture.
Yes i agree that in India there are many slum areas. But its not that only in India it exist. It also lie in USA also. Well the reason for this is that there is no comparision  between India currency with USA currency as 1$ equals to Rs 50  India. Day by day India will definitly  stand in side of developed country .During the monetary deficit Indian economy were least effected than USA economy.
Government statement in corruption :-USA  position is 11th all over the world and the amount is 7.6.while India is at 88th position all over the world and its amount is 2.9.
Have a positive thinking and positive approach will definitely convert our nation as per our dream. Thinking worst about it does not proof anything .If we can’t do something better for our country atleast we can support it.
I CERTAINLY HAVE PROUD ON OUR NATION!!!
JAI HIND!!!!!

PARIDHI AGGARWAL @ Shefali Arora - INTERJECTION #5

Thank you Shefali for attempting to give convincing answers to my questions, however I would like to differ with you in some of the aspects. I would like to say that justice delayed is as good as justice denied.. Giving life imprisonments to convicts after decades of crime holds little meaning. We all remember the Jessica Lall murder case, inspite of the fact that it was done in front of quite a few people, it took years to deliver such a judgment while Jessica lall’s father could not live to see his daughter’s murderers being convicted. Year on year we have witnesses turning hostile but no action is taken to stop all this, and this is not a few cases where judiciary has failed to deliver, rather it is the few cases which have brought limelight to the collective failure of the judiciary. Just because some nations have not been able to come to conclusion about some bomb blasts does not give us a reason to become lax.  Female foeticide  which you talked about as being a problem among illiterates is totally unfounded. According to statistics more cases were reported from families with good educational background than from families with dismal educational record. Infact a survey of patient attitudes showed that only 40% of male patients and 30% of female patients were aware of the prohibition of sex determination. While 90% purported to agree with the principle of the Act, they nevertheless maintained that a male child was important for the strengthening of the family. And these are educated women we are talking about. I doubt whether Babri masjid judgement has been a peaceful one, rather it looks as an attempt to revert the communal backlash it unleashed a long time back which has equally high chances even now. Something you achieve through curfew and military power can hardly be termed as a peaceful settlement. You talked about “Where there is a will there is a way”, surely, but I am talking of those hundreds having the will and the talent and still they never make it just because of some cunning politics. Regarding CWG, I hardly think it has been a success. The world is talking about India but not highly but mockingly. The numerous pullouts and reviews in foreign dailies are enough testimony of it. Something you cannot achieve in 30,000 crores which another country does in nearly one tenth of it is hardly to be proud of given that India has the largest poor population and the difference such a huge amount of money can make to their lives. You talked about various regulations being implemented in sex determination and monument preservation, however statistics put a big question mark on the extent of their effective implementation. Lastly I would say that I am not a critic of India’s achievements but closing our eyes to its pitfalls can be dangerous for the country.

PARUL SHARMA @ PRIYA JUNEJA - INTERJECTION # 4

I completely agree with you that we have a strong past…and I am, no doubt, proud of that past… As you yourself mention about the 7000 crores corruption in the CWG, it didn’t much present a good image of our country... And if my fellow mates are happy to see the opening ceremony which made us proud, they must go and look back the 2008 Beijing Olympics... It was far better in technology, infrastructure and presentation. And if I say my country has given me the past what has my present generation done to restore it.
You talk about India producing 656 MW of biomass power... How many rural places and even the urban parts like in UP (as I have myself experienced) are provided with this power supply…??? You count upon people like Jagdish Bose, etc. these people are rare and most of the country lags behind. We still have 70% of rural living in India while we have got metros like Delhi. Our 38% doctors, 12 % scientists and 38% NASA employees which you proudly boast of are serving the other nation and not the one they should be proud of. Isn’t it something called BRAIN DRAIN!!
I completely agree with Paridhi and Deepti Bagga, what have we done for our future generations to look upon us their past. As a popular saying:
“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery and today is a GIFT that’s why it’s called present… ”
So why should we look into the past and be proud of that, while ignoring the harm we have done to our past in the present and not improving enough for the future….

SHEFALI ARORA @ PARIDHI AGGARWAL - INTERJECTIONS #3

Thank you for the questions you have raised. I would like to say that though the above mentioned cases may have been delayed, but justice has been delivered. The accused in all these four cases are serving a life term imprisonment, which they deserve. And just for a handful of cases in which justice was delayed, we cannot blame the whole judiciary for that. There have been innumerable cases where justice has been quick.Indian democracy has not failed in any case. And its not that India is the only place where sometimes these things happen. Look at the Kanishka bombings case of Canada, it has been 25 years and no justice has been done till now. The London bombing case has still to reach a decision. Does this mean that law has failed and everywhere people get away with strong links?
I agree that female foeticide is there, but I would like to say that this social evil has been among the illiterate section of the society. And all efforts are being made to stop it. Do you know that if the doctors carry out scans to determine the sex of the child, they can be arrested and given a harsh punishment for it? Isn’t it good that if there is a certain flaw, all Indians are united in stopping it? No educated Indian indulges in this. We are girls. We are on this earth, and we will make our nation proud of us.
I think the Babri Masjid judgement has been a very peaceful one. There has been no hypocrisy, just a step ahead to maintain peace and harmony between Hindus and Muslims. And this is the need of the hour.
And regarding the CWG, I would say that it has been a major success despite all the hurdles. So maybe now you can’t say that it was a mess. Because the final result has made us even more PROUD of our country. And many sportsmen are getting a chance. CWG is again a perfect example of that. So many faces have made us proud. So it no longer remains the game of just Sachin Tendulkar or Viswanathan Anand, the newcomers have been given the best chance. I agree that because the population of our country is large, so maybe not  every single person is given a chance, but then ‘Where there is a will, there is a way.’Those who had it in them, surely made it, be it any field. This makes me feel proud.
Lastly, I would like to raise a question to you regarding the architectural heritage. Again I would say that the measures taken have reduced this problem too. With due respect to your writing about Taj Mahal, I would like to ask that should we not be proud that it is one of the wonders of the world? Many countries have many monuments, which fail to reach the list. And the refineries that were spoiling this precious monument are either shut down or given deadlines. Should not we feel proud that our past is being respected throughout the world ,and will be in the future also?
In a nutshell, I would say that nobody is perfect. India is trying to be perfect, and is soon going to be the next superpower. With all its flaws and the measures taken to correct them, I say that I am proud to be an Indian!

PRIYA JUNEJA - FOR

India – the country where I was born, the country where I live and the country which has nurtured me. And you all would agree it’s the country which claims that it could stand against the meltdown like a strong iceberg; and while those top of that iceberg were enjoying the view, no body that around 300 million(Below Poverty line) cannot manage to obtain food. But, after all we’re the fourth largest economy- right after US, China and Japan. We can always celebrate overlooking the fact that our economy a mere 7% of the giant’s economy. It’s a country where people still fight for temples and mosques, on the basis of religion, caste and creed.  It’s a country which is celebrating, the success of Common Wealth Games, the part of which was a great daylight robbery of 7000 crores of public money. But, after all Common Wealth games, we’re optimistic have been a success. It’s a country with a corruption index of 3.4 and let me point it out to you that here, lower corruption index refers to higher corruption! India is a country that tops the corruption list, that tops the list of unclean places, the population list, the education list and almost everything – I agree, very humbly. That’s the truth and I am no one to deny it.
But let me tell you my dear friends – I am a proud Indian. Yes, I am a proud Indian.  And to validate my proud, let me tell you some beautiful facts. The corrupt India is the only society in the world which has never been known for slavery. The illiterate India gave the world the number system – yes, I am talking about Aryabhatta. And let me tell you – the world’s first university, Takshila was established in our uneducated, backward India. The directionless communal India, developed the art of navigation 6000 years ago and the very word, Navigation is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Nou’. Mathematics – the great grandfather nurtured in the cradle of this country – be it Bhaskarachya’s calculation of time taken by the earth to orbit the sun or the value of that small pi or algebra or trigonometry. Now let me tell you about the contribution of India to medical. Ayurveda-oh everyone knows belongs to India but let me tell you Sushruta, the father of surgery conducted complicated surgeries like cesareans, cataract, artificial limbs, fractures and even plastic and brain surgery- 2600 years ago! Yes, I am talking about the corrupt India, the unclean India and uneducated India.
Well those against being proud of India may smile at all this and with their hearts elated – they can say: Hey you let us remind you that’s history! India was the largest contributor to mathematics but now we’ve Princetons and Harvards- better than us! India did a great work in medical but now we’ve Texas. And they may very rightfully say that I am using past to validate the sense of worth in present. To them, my answer has two parts. One, what a nation is, where it stands now is largely determined by its past and when we talk about nations, it becomes absolutely imperative that we talk about the past. And the past of our India is fascinating and interesting as it is momentous. Well, I know most would be more than unconvinced with this reason of mine, largely conventional but the one I firmly stand with. So for unconvinced, I’ve another. India is the world’s largest democracy. Our powerless, weak India has the largest number of biomass gasifier systems in the world producing 656 mega watts (MW) of power. India was the first country to be accorded the status of a Pioneer Investor in 1987 and was allocated an exclusive area in the central Indian Ocean by the UN for exploration and utilization of resources. India signed a ground breaking civil nuclear deal with US in 2008 thus facilitating fuel supply for its nuclear reactors. The deal offers potential for a paradigm shift in India’s global role. The importance of the deal does not lie merely in the transfer of nuclear energy. Its importance is psychological. It opens the door to a new era of trust and cooperation between India and the US. India is the 3rd largest producer of solar photovoltaic cells in the world producing 2.12 MW of power. India is the world’s 4th largest wind power user. India has jumped five places to become the world’s 11th biggest exporter of commercial services in 2005, and inched one step ahead to the 29th rank among the largest merchandise exporters, according to the latest statistics by World Trade Organization. The Indian Software Industry has grown from a mere US $ 150 million in 1991-92 to a staggering US $ 5.7 billion in 1999-2000. No other Indian industry has performed so well against the global competition. IEEE has proved what has been a century old suspicion in the world scientific community that the pioneer of wireless communication was Prof. Jagdish Bose and not Marconi. India has the second largest pool of Scientists and Engineers in the World. Illiterate, uneducated India is the second largest English speaking nation in the world. India is the only country other than the USA and Japan, to have built a super computer indigenously. In2008, a world record was set when India’s Polar rocket successfully placed ten satellites, including the country’s remote sensing satellite, into orbit in a single mission. India born steel czar Lakshmi Mittal and Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani figure in the Forbes list of “World’s most powerful billionaires” who wield staggering authority and influence far beyond their riches. The TATA group, State Bank of India and Infosys Technologies are among 17 Indian firms that figure among the top 50 in the list of the world’s 200 most-reputed companies.  World’s largest electronic ID program is underway in India. India is the largest producer of milk, cashew nuts, coconuts, tea, ginger, turmeric and black pepper, in the world. It also has the world’s largest cattle population (281 million). It is the second largest producer of wheat, rice, sugar, groundnut and inland fish. And talking about Harvards and Princetons: 38% of Doctors in America are Indians, 12% of Scientists in America are Indians, 36% of NASA employees are Indians, 34% of Microsoft employees are Indians, 28% of IBM employees are Indians, 17% of Intel employees are Indians and 13% of Xerox employees are Indians.
And if you could not digest all this, don’t worry, Indian pharmaceuticals will provide you enough pills as it’s the second largest pharmaceutical industry. I can tell you more but go home, and do it for yourself; yes you guessed it right – google it. Google sees more reasons than you do to be proud of India. And now let me come to the point, strongest in my view and may be one of most lame thing, as you may call it, to cover the negatives of India. The spirituality, the Vedas, Bhagwad Gita- the books, the words, the ideas that lay our foundation are undoubtedly ad undisputedly enlightening.
If all that leaves you unconvinced, I would accept the truth – the actual reason of my being proud of India is that I am an INDIAN. When I can be proud of myself, my accomplishments despite a hundred flaws, when I can be proud of my sibling, despite his many disqualities and when I can be proud of my parents’ kindness and goodness, though they may not be good and kind to everyone – why not should I be proud of my nation, my country – the country which has made me what I am, which has given me this write to speak!

PARIDHI AGGARWAL @ Shefali Arora - INTERJECTION #2

Today we have cases running for more than 20 years. Sometimes by the time the case comes to the court neither the accused nor the prosecutor is alive. Cases like Priyadarshini matto, Nitish katara, Jessica lall and Pratibha murthy are perfect examples how accused with strong political links can get away by influencing the judiciary. Is it not a mockery of the very democracy we so proudly talk about??
Agreed we have lot of women like Indra nooyi and Kalpana Chawla who have given a new meaning to women empowerment and proved that women are no less than men in any field, but can we forget the many Indra nooyis and kalpana chawlas who are killed before they are born?
We talk about great sportspersons like Sachin tendulkar , Abhinav bindra and Saina nehwal who have brought laurels to the country, but what about those hundreds of others who could have reached the same heights if all they could have been provided was a coach and a sports complex but were never given a chance??
We talk about unity in diversity and India being a secular country, but don’t these words sound pompous and pure hypocrisy when we witness events like Babri masjid demolition, Gujarat communal riots and politicians playing dirty divisive politics to milk such situations?
We talk of our great architectural heritage while at the same time we are the ones who keep defacing the monuments by beetel stains and ugly scratching. If this is not hypocrisy then what else is it??

The reason India is such a mess is this ‘chalta hai attitude of us Indians’. ‘Jugaad’ something we Indians are well trained in has become a hindrance to the nation’s development  rather than being a last resort to set things right and the commonwealth games are a perfect example of this.

Now should we be proud of being an Indian??

PARIDHI AGGARWAL @ ALL- INTERJECTION #1

Many of my dear friends have raised the issue of rich cultural and architectural heritage inherited by us. Indeed India has one of the richest cultural histories. It is a land of Aryabhatta, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda and many more people who significantly changed the outlook of the world. It’s a good thing to revere in the past but it is totally meaningless if we overlook the present and keep admiring the past. India is known and will always be known by its present to a large extent and not it’s past. And with the way it's progressing the day is not far when this rich cultural history we keep talking about will vanish away due to our own deeds. Today India is characterized by corruption and its poor living conditions, not by its rich historical past. India today has one third of total people living below the poverty line in the entire world with absolute number being more than 410 million!!
Is it something to be proud of?
It tops the chart of being one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Lakhs of crores are stashed as black money in Swiss banks while no government is able to provide quality midday meals to the poor children or employment opportunities to the poor farmers. Tonnes of grain are left to rot in the fields while millions go hungry. The agriculture minister finds it difficult to give the poor foodgrains for free while he is absolutely okay with them rotting away in fields and granaries.
Is it something to be proud of??

PARUL SHARMA

Respected judges and my dear opponents, I hereby speak against the motion, WE ARE INDIANS! ARE WE PROUD OF INDIA?
A very debatable topic I agree, and my opponents might have just great views about my country.
Truly said,
“Patriotism is a belief that my country is greater than yours because i was born here.”
And being born an Indian, I respect my country and will always do. I am proud of the Taj Mahal (a wonder of the world), Kashmir (heaven on earth) and most importantly my culture…. But don’t you agree, that all I am proud of, has been ruined my country mates in today’s generation. If we have such a great country why couldn’t we restore the monuments that stood pretty some 20 years back? And what have we done for our future generations to look up to us and be proud of their past. NOTHING!!! And why are we not capable of creating peace in the most beautiful place in the world. Still, many countrymen are afraid to go to Kashmir and enjoy its immense beauty because of the daily riots taking place. My culture, I know and I am proud to say, is the best and one of the oldest civilizations in the world and being the most FLEXIBLE of all is able to survive for so long.
BUT, what have we done with our culture after independence…
Yes I am proud our ancestors who fought for the country’s independence to their deaths.. But what have we done to the democracy we have acquired. All started with Gandhiji’s assault, murders of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi (the people who wanted to improve our country), the Babri Masjid case and most recently the Commonwealth Games. The media certainly has shown us the ugly faces of the CWG acts, and no one would disagree with me that ,although Delhi was improved, but still we have ashamed our country with such show of our Capital. This showed how corrupted our officials are…
And The Babri Masjid case showed how democratic our country is, but the countrymen don’t understand the meaning of democracy, by doing dharnas, riots and much more they don’t fulfill the meaning of being democratic…
When our leaders are not good enough to respect the beauty and culture of our nation, what do we expect out of the countrymen?
If we need to improve upon our country we must blend modernness with our own very culture. All that Rajiv Gandhi did to develop the country was laudable. The computerization of our country was because of him. But what did he get for making the country proud was his assault. And people who shame us with all these assaults and riots, these few and reckless elements will not let the country develop. Although these elements might be present in other parts of the worlds like USA, Japan etc. but still these country’s are develoing...How?? Japan which was shattered in the World War II has emerged as a technological hub of the world, still retaining their culture.
And what else should I say of my country, the following facts will do…
There are 3.22 Million Indians in America. .
38% of Doctors in America are Indians.
12% of Scientists in America are Indians.
36% of NASA employees are Indians.

My fellow opponents would be proud of reading these facts. But certainly I am not. It’s a simple case of BRAIN DRAIN.
Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam had said that reverse brain drain will have to begin if India is to become a developed nation in the future. But the percentage of students coming back after studying overseas is not very high.
People like APJ Kalam are rare and not given the chance to lead the nation, that’s where we lag behind…
And like every other youngster who adores the beauty, the lifestyle, the infrastructure, the technology and off course the cleanliness of foreign nations, I too would want to go and live a life like that.
Because my nation does make me proud of its history and culture but its PRESENT ruins all done in the past.
